Breaking Down Some Numbers
I've heard some arguments recently how Oregon hasn't proved themselves in the Pac-10 yet because the teams they've beat are 0-8 in the Pac... But the teams the Beaver's have beat in the Pac-10 are 4-2! I thought I'd look into the 0-8 and 4-2 a little more... because numbers can be deceiving the way you use them.
First and foremost, 3 of those 8 losses are to OREGON!
The remaining 5 are all respectable losses:
2 - USC (who has won the Pac-10 the last 7 YEARS!)
2 - Stanford (who started 3-0 in the Pac-10 before losing to OSU)
1 - Arizona State (who may only be 1-1 in conference but despite how bad ASU has been playing this year... this loss was by Washington State)
Washington State has a bye and Cal & UCLA are playing each other this weekend. That means despite what happens, that 0-8 record will only be 1-9 after this weekend. Still sounds bad, huh?
Let's take this same logic and apply it to the Beavers... The teams they've beat have a record of 4-2 in the Pac-10 (Or 4-0 if not including the Beavers)... Sounds much better than Oregon's 0-8, right?!?
Let's take a look at those 4 wins from Oregon State's opponents (Plus 3 of the 4 are Stanford's wins).
2 - Washington State (enough said)
1 - Washington (Yes respectable this year... but they are still the team that went 0-12 last year).
1 - UCLA (respectable)
Oregon State's conference loss is to Arizona, a team that is 3-2 or 1-1 in conference (that 1 win being over Oregon State and one loss being to... Washington).
So what'd we learn from that exercise?!? Not much, not much at all... but since I'm already this far...
For $hits and giggles, let's take a look at Oregon's non-conference opponents... They are 11-6 (or 10-4 if not including Oregon). So far this season all of Oregon's opponents are 18-15 (or 17-10 if not including Oregon).
***If you exclude the two patsies (Washington State and Purdue whom only have 1 win each and are likely not to beat more than anther team or two) you are looking at an opponents record of the other 4 teams at 16-5 (or 15-2 if not including Oregon).
Take a look at Oregon State's non-conference opponents... They are 10-8 (or 9-6 if not including Oregon State). So far this season all of Oregon State's opponents are 20-14 (or 18-10 if not including Oregon State).
***If you exclude the two patsies (Portland State and UNLV whom only have 2 wins each) you are looking at an opponents record of the other 4 teams at 16-6 (or 14-4 if not including Oregon State).
Both teams seem fairly equal when you break them down like that...
Oregon's Non-conference Schedule (excluding UofO): 11-6 (10-4)
OSU's Non-conference Schedule (excluding OSU) : 10-8 (9-6 )
Oregon's Overall Schedule (excluding UofO): 18-15 (17-10)
OSU's Overall Schedule (excluding OSU) : 20-14 (18-10)
Oregon's Overall Schedule w/o patsies (excluding UofO): 16-5 (15-2)
OSU's Overall Schedule w/o patsies (excluding OSU) : 16-6 (14-4)
So after this long and extensive look at this... Just what have we learned? Mainly that the numbers don't matter yet and won't make complete sense until the end of the season when everyone has had a chance to play one another... Plus I pretty much just wasted 15 minutes of my life... And you wasted 5 for reading this (but what else do you have to do on a bye week?!?).
Nonetheless... bring on the rest of the schedule...

A Little Civil War (and Boise State) Humor
Nick from Off The Pond goes Off The Pond and wrote a piece for The Norman Einsteins, Sports & Rocket Science Monthy college football preview regarding this year's Civil War (towards the bottom). There is also a funny peice on the Oregon vs. Boise State game at the top from One Bronco Nation Under God. Good work as usual Nick.

The Gift That Keeps Giving

Sun Bowl Association officials are looking to break the Guinness World Record for the largest YMCA dance when the Village People perform at halftime of the Brut Sun Bowl this year. The Civil War victory is just the gift that keeps giving.

Oregon State Jokes
How do you make Beaver cookies?
Beat them up and take them out of the bowl.
How do you keep a Beaver out of your garden?
Plant a bed of roses.
Here are some older ones from the Wine's Family Blog & Lightning Strikes Blog.

Goooooo Ducks!
Bellotti says that Kelly doesn't have an interview scheduled on Wednesday as previously reported.
Oregon's cheerleaders are getting some more attention.
Reed was named MVP and Jeremiah Johnson most inspirational player during Oregon's postseason awards banquet.
Here are some absolutely wonderful quotes from Oregon State fans.
Interesting tid bits from the Civil War...
OSU... That was payback for 2000! For those of you who know Dolemite (I got this text from him)... "U should just walk around town and bitch slap Beaver fans because that's what the Ducks did last night"

Interesting tid bits from the Civil War...
- The Ducks were 9 yards shy of beating Oregon State's most yards allowed in a game (Penn State - 454)... IN THE FIRST HALF.
- 65 points were the most ever allowed by OSU

What Do You Wager On The Civil War?
Being Civil War week there are bets being made all around the state between Duck and Beaver fans. Most you will find are not monetary but wagers that humiliate, embarrass and generally belittle the losers. I'm interested to hear about these bets (either this year or in the past) and will post some of the top ones for the amusement of everyone.

GameDay Hates Corvallis

- Stakes in 112th Civil War are greater than ever. There is so much on the line.
- GameDay is headed to Stillwater instead of Oregon State. Too bad GameDay still hasn't heard of Corvallis.
- Bellotti doesn't buy all the motivation gimmicks to get the Ducks pumped up to play the Beavers.
- For the first time in the last 3 years it will be the Ducks entering the Civil war out of a bye instead of Oregon State. Bellotti has fared well after a bye with the last loss being to Arizona when Dixon went down.
- So many predictions out this time of the season. Most predict the Ducks to play in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego despite losing to Oregon State. Cal's victory over Stanford last weekend assured the Ducks cannot make the Rose Bowl.
- Setting up the stage for Civil War with some stat comparisons and a few links.
- The Beaver's play like family and their coach has incredible confidence in his team. Really? Don't most teams play like family and have a coach with confidence in their players?
- Do the Ducks have a prayer? Sure they do... and here is why.
- Don't know much about the Civil War? Here is a COMPLETE game-by-game reprise.
- What running game will the Ducks see on Saturday? Will Quizz Rodgers be ready to play? If so, how much pain can Quizz take? Here is an injury update for the Civil War.
- 112 Things you need to know about the Civil War.

Random Links of the Day
- Another Civil war piece that recaps the 2005 season to setup a huge UO/OSU game (at least for the Ducks).
- The arena recently started construction and has a dedicated website.
- LaMichael James highlighted the rookie scrimmage. The 5'9" James has been helping Oregon prepare for the 5'7" Quizz Rodgers.
- Obviously Bellotti and the Ducks want the Beavers to beat Arizona this weekend to setup an even bigger Civil War next week. All eyes in Oregon will be looking for an OSU win this weekend.

Thanks For Nothing
First, I just want to say congratulations to Oregon State for upsetting #1 USC. Yes, I'm giving props now because I know I'll hear about it all season long.
Second, let me be first to say, DAMN IT... Thanks for pissing them off. So not only are Beaver fans going to gloat all season about beating the mighty Trojans, but will likely get to rub it more because USC is going to make some heads roll next week when they return to the Colosseum.
Some interesting things to take from that game:
1.) Who taught the Trojans how to tackle?
2.) Yes, that was the same defense that lost their whole front 7 and held USCs stable of running backs to under 100 yards rushing.
3.) "Quizz" is agile and quick but damn is that kid tiny.
4.) Maualuga's knee is F'ed.
5.) USC has now lost 3 of the last 4 games in Corvallis. Seriously? Corvallis?
6.) I love it when Sanchez looks like he is about to cry.
Mark it... Beavs are going to loose Utah next week. Further proving the Pac-10 isn't worth a $hit this year.
Just because this is a new season, the Thursday curse (top team upsets) is not broken. Thank our lucky stars that the Ducks aren't playing on a Thursday this year.

YOUR Fans?

The NUMBER #1 college football team IN AMERICA is coming to YOUR stadium. Espn will be in YOUR town for the 1st time EVER. YOUR game is only 1 of 2 games on national television on a Thursday night and the other teams playing are Southern Methodist and Tulane. YOUR team even pulled off the upset the last time this opponent was in town.
How do YOUR fans react?
By not selling out your stadium and at the last minute YOUR administration turns some of those tickets into student tickets so it's not THAT embarrassing. They have been discussing this issue on 1080 the past few days (and I'm sure on 95.5 as well... But I can't stand Canzano) and I've even heard Duck, Husky and Cougar fans calling in to admit they've bought tickets to go watch this game at Reser. Sad when your in-state rivals over-sell their stadium(attendance at the bottom) against the worst football team in the FBS.
